What is christianity?Christians might argue that gene engineering gives us a role that God did not intend for us, we are therefore disobeying God's will.
It also cannot be denied that genetic engineering has firm roots within evolution of manking and its science which contradicts God and the Bible. For example, science would contradit the story of Adam and Eve. Could we also be meddling with spiritual life when we change our physical life? Perhaps the andvancement of this type of science shows a firm defiance in God itself. There does not seem to be a way in which Gene editing is supported by Christianity and vice versa. However, what if God's will is for humans to discover this science? Either way we cannot be sure. Overall, from what we can infer from stories from the bible and the teachings of Christianity telling us that God is superior- and the (only) creator of life- we can say almost certainly that christianity would be against gene editing. |
Christianity is a monotheistic religion based on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ, who serves as the focal point for the religion. It is the world's largest religion, with over 2.4 billion followers, or 33% of the global population, known as Christians. It's followers believe in several main points :
applying Christianity to gene editing. |
Hinduism is the world's oldest existant religion, with a billion followers, which makes it the world's third largest religion. Hinduism is a conglomeration of religious, philosophical, and cultural ideas and practices that originated in India, characterized by the belief in reincarnation, one absolute being of multiple manifestations, the law of cause and effect, following the path of righteousness, and the desire for liberation from the cycle of births and deaths.

What is Hinduism? |
Hinduism and genetic modification
Gene editing in embryo's is just one way that programmes like CRISPR can be used. There are many other ways to use genetic modification, e.g. in farming, organ harvesting etc. Would Hinduism accept all of these ? Hindu's believe in a cycle of birth and rebirth, gene editing could be seen as altering this process especially if an embryo is created just as an experiment.
Hindus also believe that some animals are holy and respect them. They believe that one should respect, honour and adore the cow. By honouring this gentle animal, who gives more than she takes, they honour all creatures.Hindus regard all living creatures as sacred – mammals, fishes, birds and more. They acknowledge this reverence for life in our special affection for the cow. At festivals Hindus decorate and honour her, but they do not worship her in the sense that they worship the Deity. Because of this it is certain that Hindus would be completely against organ harvesting and genetic modification in humans and embryos- designer babies.
However, they probably would not completely reject genetic modification in farming as this does not contradict the faith in any way.
In conclusion, 2 out of the three ways i am studying by which CRISPR can be used would be completely rejected by Hindus. Overall, i am certain that Hindus would not allow Gene Editing as it contradicts their faith.
